What is LASIK eye surgery?
LASIK stands for “Laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis”. LASIK is a common procedure used to correct eye problems, such as nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. All three are conditions that affect the eye’s ability to focus on objects clearly. It is a refractive surgery that we use to reshape the cornea of your eyes. Our goal when reshaping your cornea is to allow light to enter your eye at properly so that it will be focused on the retina so that your vision will be clearer. The Parts of the Eye
To understand how this surgery works and what we do to give you better vision, it will help to understand the different parts of the eye. The cornea is the lens of your eye – the clear outer surface of your eye through which light passes on its way to the retina. The retina is within your eye, at the back, and is the surface that light must fall upon to be processed by your brain, which allows you to see. When the shape of the cornea distorts, it will alter the angle at which the light enters your eyes, distorting the image that you end up seeing. This surgery aims to correct the shape of your cornea to correct your vision.
The LASIK Procedure
The first step in the procedure is making sure you remain comfortable throughout by numbing your eyes with a local anesthetic. Once we are sure that you will be comfortable, we can make a few small (water-soluble) marks on your eye to help guide us in the procedure. We will hold your eye steady with a special tool and make a cut in your cornea using a special laser. We reposition the cornea accordingly and attached back to the surface of the eye.
